Featured releases: October 2025
As October unfolds, it’s time to embrace fresh perspectives and look ahead to the final stretch of the year. Let’s take a look at some of our featured releases this month.
Perfecting the U.S. Constitution
This book explores the transformative power of the twenty-seven Constitutional Amendments in shaping American history, democracy and social justice. It traces how each amendment came to be, explaining its purpose, significance and lasting impact on American life. Through the lens of these amendments, the book recounts the nation’s journey from the abolition of slavery and women’s suffrage to voting rights for younger citizens and the pursuit of equality for all. It also examines landmark developments such as prohibition, presidential succession and the establishment of federal income tax. Emphasising that the amendments are central – not secondary – to understanding the Constitution, the book portrays them as living instruments that continue to evolve through interpretation and public will. Ultimately, it celebrates the amendments as expressions of the American people’s ongoing effort to perfect their democracy.
Cricket, Fiction and Nation
This book traces how cricket has been represented in fiction from the nineteenth century to the present, revealing how the sport has mirrored shifts in national identity, empire and globalisation. Organised into seven thematic chapters, it begins with the village cricket story, which linked the game to Englishness, rural life and wartime endurance. It then examines the public school cricket novel’s portrayals of war, masculinity and homosexuality, followed by an exploration of cricket’s surprising role in murder mysteries, where the sport’s structure parallels the detective narrative. Subsequent chapters highlight cricket’s potential for both comedy and tragedy, including its association with mishap, ageing and suicide. The book goes on to show how post-colonial writers transformed cricket fiction by incorporating themes of migration, race and cultural hybridity. It concludes by addressing contemporary ‘end-of-the-world’ cricket stories that reflect anxieties about climate change and the sport’s uncertain future.
AI and Ada
This book traces the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and literary creativity, beginning with the author’s reflections on the current AI revolution and his personal engagement with the field. The first chapter explores whether AI and machine translation can capture the essence of literary works, proposing translation as an optimisation problem that balances meaning, rhythm and emotional nuance. The second chapter examines the possibility of AI-generated literature, using Vladimir Nabokov’s hyper-conscious artistry to question whether machines could ever replicate human creativity, emotion and self-awareness. The third chapter analyses the breakthroughs behind Large Language Models, explaining how advances in neural networks, attention mechanisms and semantic modeling have enabled genuine linguistic intelligence while still lacking emotional depth. The book concludes by contemplating whether machines might one day attain real sensation and emotion – capable of creating art with authentic feeling rather than imitation.
Thom Browne
In just over two decades, New York–based designer Thom Browne has revolutionised contemporary fashion by redefining classic American style. Known for his cropped suits and gender-fluid tailoring, Browne has challenged traditional norms of proportion and identity in menswear and beyond. His meticulously staged runway shows blend performance and critique, turning fashion into a deeply expressive art form. Widely celebrated for his influence, Browne has won multiple CFDA awards and currently serves as the organisation’s Chair. This book examines his role as a fashion auteur through four key collections, exploring how his visionary designs and presentations have reshaped the aesthetics and meaning of modern fashion.
Sebastian Masuda
This book offers the first English-language biography of Sebastian Masuda, the visionary Japanese artist and creator known as the king of Harajuku’s ‘kawaii’ (cute) culture. Masuda’s vibrant use of neon colors and playful aesthetics helped shape the Decora fashion movement and redefined kawaii as a bold, non-violent form of rebellion and self-expression. Beyond fashion, his creative reach spans art and entertainment – from giant Hello Kitty and Doraemon sculptures to the Kawaii Monster Café and collaborations with pop icon Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. The book also explores how Masuda’s lonely childhood and introspective youth profoundly influenced his artistic worldview. Ultimately, it presents Kawaii not merely as a style but as a layered philosophy and way of life rooted in resilience, creativity and emotional depth.
Climates of Migration
Climates of Migration explores the deep interconnections between environmental change, migration and the political manipulation of both across history and geography. The book situates current debates within colonial and postcolonial contexts, tracing how imperial expansion and propaganda shaped ideas of mobility, belonging and displacement – legacies that still influence contemporary border politics. It then examines how climate change denial and anti-immigration rhetoric have become intertwined, using metaphors of invasion and catastrophe to justify exclusionary policies such as the EU’s ‘Green Deal’ and ‘New Pact on Migration and Asylum’. Later chapters highlight how writers and artists counter these narratives through empathy, accountability and ecological awareness, particularly in African literature responding to environmental devastation and forced migration. The conclusion analyses how digital technologies now amplify propaganda and disinformation, turning the climate–migration nexus into a key battleground in today’s global information wars.
